HyaPak
It’s all about Sustainability
Visit StartupHyaPak is a startup that makes biodegradable alternatives to plastics out of the invasive water hyacinth (the world's most problematic aquatic weed).
Basically, we use one problem, water hyacinth, to solve another problem, plastic waste pollution, and create green jobs for the affected local communities.
HyaPak has been named as the best startup in COP 28 under Nature, Food and Water Systems, the best innovation in Kenya by the East Africa Community, and is listed by Yale Africa Startup Review as part of the Top 30 startups in Africa, among other awards.

The Back Story
Sometime back, my classmates and I got stuck in Lake Naivasha because of water hyacinth surrounding our boat for close to 5 hours. It was particularly sad to see the fishermen struggling in the same predicament.
When we went back to school, (Egerton University), the lecturers thought it would be a great idea to work on water hyacinth for the final year engineering project. Lots of evolution later, this became a startup, HyaPak, and here we are.
